However I am now finding that any users that used this "auto-open-at-exit" setup while coding a script in 1.8 that got updated to 1.9 find their PHP installs are no longer alerted when they close the app on exit (as they used to).
Is there any way around this? Do I need to code the "exit" and "quit" methods in php for 1.8 / 1.9 if I want to ensure the script can be used in both versions? I'm not sure if I could. Is there some other solution that works with both versions?

Answered this myself for future reference in case anyone else was curious.
The old setup used the system function exit() which is only available in PHP 5.3+ (and requires the "exit" method of the SPL)
The new setup (from 1.8 onwards) uses the "Quit" method of PHP's global SPL function and works with either PHP 5.3 or above.
PHP 5.3+ quits the process as it quits, but PHP 5.2 (and 5.3 alpha 5) requires the "exit" function in the SPL to be called in order to quit.
